History of H.Greenberg & Son, Inc.

H. Greenberg & Son, Inc. opened Feb. 3, 1949 at 3:00 p.m. at 321 Main Street in Bennington, Vermont on a very cold and snowy day. Even with the bad weather, customers from as far away as Cambridge, Shushan, Salem, Cherry Plain, North Adams and Manchester stopped to visit the new store. In the early 1900’s, Harry Greenberg ran an agricultural and livestock business in Vermont. The business grew and prospered, and in 1949 under the leadership of Harry’s son, Norman, moved to its present location on Main Street in Bennington. This new and enlarged retail store was the site of the former Empire Market, a local grocery store. The new store was the start of the Complete Home Center that is still serving the tri-state area today. Rather than selling heavier, more expensive farm tool implements, the downtown location sold hardware items and supplies. The new store carried a complete line of hardware, plumbing, electrical and paint plus a limited line of building materials and lumber. Until that time, Southern Vermont’s needs were served by many smaller, specialized shops: paint stores, hardware stores, lumber yards, etc. Greenbergs was the first to sell everything that the homeowner and contractor would need to build a home at one location. Greenbergs was on the cutting edge of retailing and locally developed the concept of a home center before the word was coined. Norman Greenberg brought “one-stop hardware shopping” to Bennington. During the early 1950’s, Greenberg’s increased the lumber and building materials departments. They expanded around the new location, using the space to build an outside lumber storage area and also providing ample parking for their customers. In 1967, Greenberg’s purchased the Winslow property, located next to the K of C. on Main Street in Bennington. The property consisted of the A.H. Winslow Hardware Store, coal towers & sheds and a garage. An addition was built at that time connecting the original Greenberg retail building to the Winslow property complex. This formed the 22,000 square foot retail store and warehouse that still stands in Bennington today. In 1976, they opened a 12,000 square foot retail store with a 6,000 square foot warehouse in North Adams MA. During this time, Greenberg’s expanded their lines at both locations to include plants and shrubs in the newly created Garden Centers. In 1992, the North Adams location added 14,000 square feet of storage space and increased the retail space to 18,000 square feet. At this time, the Garden Center was increased and a new greenhouse constructed. In 1999, the original Bennington greenhouse was replaced with a larger modern Garden Center Complex that is the "Crown Jewel" of the Bennington location during the summer months. Throughout the years, H.Greenberg & Son, Inc. has added, increased and changed product lines to meet the needs of their customers. Greenberg's is synonymous with supplying quality lumber, building materials, hardware and service to their customers in the tri-state area. This ideal will be the continued goal of Greenbergs to serve their customers now and into the future .
